Your partner in education and faith,
Mary Stalzer Principal Athletic Program
The Guardian Angels Catholic School athletic program provides athletic activity, training, and competition for the students enrolled in the school. The purpose of the athletic program is to provide athletic experiences for as many of our students in the fifth through eighth grades as possible. To this end, the guidelines listed below serve the students, their parents, and the coaches with a program consistent with the mission and philosophy of the school.
Participation is the measure of the program's success. Winning is a desirable outcome of effort, hard work, skill development, and fair play. Losing offers opportunities to learn from mistakes, to plan, to make adjustments, and to improve concentration.
ORGANIZATION
Teams are identified by grade level, gender, and sport. Boys participate in baseball, soccer, basketball, volleyball, bowling, golf and track and field. Girls participate in volleyball, basketball, soccer, softball, bowling, golf and track and field. The track and field season is coeducational.
In order to provide as much participation as possible, more than one team may be organized at either the varsity or junior varsity level. When sufficient interest exists to organize more than one team, the constituency of the teams will be determined by the coaches and director of athletics.
Playing time must be appropriate and substantial, not incidental. Coaches must work diligently to include all student athletes in all contests. Maintaining this participation goal may be difficult in specific athletic contests and coaches must always be aware and concerned with the safety of the situation.
ATHLETIC COMMITTEE
The Athletic Committee offers advice to the director of athletics about maintaining a Christian environment and purpose of the athletic program at Guardian Angels. The committee assists the director in:
· developing, implementing, and evaluating the extracurricular athletic activities · recommending the acquisition of equipment necessary for a safe operation of the program · advising on the allocation of funds for the various athletic activities · recommending policies and procedures to increase participation · improving communication between the athletes, their parents, and the school · promoting the Christian atmosphere of the program
Membership of the Athletic Advisory Committee will include mothers and fathers who have children in the fifth through eighth grades. It is recommended, but not mandated, the membership includes a mixture of parents whose children participate in both boys' and girls' teams in the fifth through eighth grades. Members are appointed by the chairperson of the committee. The committee should consist of at least five parents.
Meetings should be scheduled before the beginning of the first season of the academic year and after the last season concludes. There should be at least one meeting scheduled during the academic year. All meetings should begin with a prayer. The chairperson presides at all meetings.
COACHES
Volunteer coaches are recruited for their sincere interest in children. All behavior and language must be consistent with our faith and the purpose of the school.
Coaches must arrive on time for practices and competitions and they are responsible for supervising the student athletes under their direction.
Coaches may not drive students to or from practices or competitions (with the exception of a parent-coach), and they may not leave an athlete unattended.
Coaches must inform the director of athletics if they cannot attend and coach a scheduled practice or game. If they cannot contact the director, the principal must be notified as soon as possible.
If high school-aged coaches are used, fraternization to any degree will not be tolerated.
ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
The director of athletics oversees the program, recruits coaches, and schedules competitions. The director is the communication liaison between the teachers and coaches and between the coaches and the Pinellas Youth Conference.
It is the responsibility of the director to communicate to the coach in a timely manner when students may not practice or play due to academic, behavior, or attendance problems. If a student is not eligible to participate in practice or an interscholastic competition, it is the responsibility of the director to notify the coach immediately.
It is the responsibility of the director to organize a banquet at the end of the athletic season to recognize all participants and their coaches.
ATHLETIC ELIGIBILITY
Teachers must notify the principal whenever there is an academic or behavior problem. The principal then notifies the athletic director who notifies the coach. Students may not participate in practice or competition the days they serve a detention or suspension. They may not practice or compete if they must attend Saturday School until the penalty is served.
Athletic eligibility depends on a number of worthwhile characteristics. These include (but are not limited to) a student's behavior, academic achievement, and attendance. All of these characteristics must be acceptable to the student's teachers, coaches, and athletic director to allow for participation in the Guardian Angels athletic program.
Teachers will notify the principal when a student is failing a subject, or the grade point average falls below 2.0 on the report card, or a teacher has a concern about a student's academic performance.
If any teacher indicates to the principal the student's cumulative average is an F in any given subject, the student is not eligible for athletic competition for one week. After one week the student's grade will be reviewed and the student may regain eligibility as long as the subject average is acceptable.
If a student earns two cumulative F grades in the same grading period in any subject, the student is not eligible for two weeks. After two weeks the student's grades will be reviewed. During the two week period, the student may not attend practices or games.
All incidents of misbehavior may be addressed with the Code of Conduct.
Coaches have the ability to issue verbal warnings, temporary removal from practices or games, and a note or FYI to parents. Only the director of athletics may issue a detention.
ATHLETIC FEES
A fee may be charged to every student who participates. The fee will be determined by the principal with advice from the athletic director.
PARTICIPATION
The number of participants will be determined by the number of coaches available in any given season. A student who comes to the try-outs and the practices will play as long as grades, behavior, and health permit. As long as a sufficient number of qualified coaches are available to assure proper instructions and safe competition every effort will be made to accommodate the number of participants. A limited number of coaches will limit the number of participants.
TRANSPORTATION
Parents are encouraged to drive to all athletic events. Parents will be responsible for arranging transportation to and from each athletic event. The athletic director and coaches cannot be responsible for arranging transportation. Non-parent coaches and the athletic director are not allowed to drive children to athletic events. Parents will receive a list or roster of team members prior to each sport season and can arrange carpools accordingly. If a child is in aftercare, the parent must arrange for the child to be taken back to aftercare if unable to attend the event. All students who play athletics should be able to have transportation to and from the games, either by his/her parents, or by carpools which have been arranged by each parent.
CONFERENCE AFFILIATION
Guardian Angels Catholic School is a member of the Pinellas Youth Conference and will abide by its guidelines and rules unless noted.
ATHLETIC AWARDS
Athletic awards are presented to student athletes after the conclusion of all interscholastic competitions. These awards are most commonly presented to students at an athletic banquet just before the conclusion of the school year. Awards include: · plaques to eighth grade students listing name, graduation year, and sports participated in while at Guardian Angels · a Christian Athlete Award plaque to one athlete voted by teammates from each team listing name, academic year, and sport · Certificate of Merit to all athletes who participate in the athletic program listing level of participation and the sport.
FINANCES
All monies, revenues and expenditures, must flow through the school bookkeeper. There are no exceptions to this policy. Educational Programs
GACS provides a competitive academic program with commitment to Catholic education as the central focus. The core subjects include religion, language arts, science, mathematics, social studies, composition (Grades 6-8) and Spanish (Grades 6-8). The middle school students have three periods of physical education, one period of technology and one period of health, art, and music weekly. Library and guidance are offered to the middle school students on occasion. The students in grades Kindergarten through five have two periods of physical education, one period of technology, Spanish, art, music, library, and guidance weekly. Students in grades 3 -5 have one period of health a week.
Teachers collaborate with the music, art and technology teachers to integrate subject content material. Catholic doctrine, faith experiences and morality are constantly integrated into the academic subjects. Traditional testing, standardized testing, performance-based assessment, peer evaluation and self-assessment are various ways student progress is followed. Portfolios and/or rubrics are tools also used to measure the academic growth of students. At the middle school level, an advanced class is offered in Math for students who have been identified by standardized test scores, placement test and teacher recommendation as being proficient enough to handle the accelerated math track. The guidance counselor, along with the students’ teachers, create Student Support Plans when needed.
Educational Programs for Kindergarten
The goal for each class at GACS is to provide a developmentally appropriate learning environment for all students. For this reason, each class is grounded in curriculum and assessment, enrichment, faith, and a variety of teaching practices that allow for each child to find his/her own place in the classroom.

Extended Day Guardian Angels Catholic School operates an
Extended Day program only for its students. It begins at dismissal and ends at
6:00 PM on all the days students are in attendance with the exception of the
following: the last day of student attendance before Thanksgiving; Christmas;
spring; and summer vacations. It is also available on Early Dismissal days. On
these days students are required to pack their lunches since no Alternative
Lunch is available. Extended day offers students a variety of
activity areas including games, reading, art, homework, listening, crafts, and
outside play. Students may bring more suitable clothing from home, and a snack
time is provided. Snacks from home must properly be packaged and contained. Security is an important concern. Parents
must list the names of all drivers who have permission to pick up children from
the extended day area The registration fee is $10.00 per family.
The application process includes payment of the fee and completion of the
registration form. This process must be completed before students attend the
extended day program. All parents are encouraged to register their students in
case of an unexpected need or emergency. The cost for students enrolled in the program
full time is $165.00 per month for the first child, $130.00 per month for the
second child, $100.00 per month for the third child, and $80.00 per month for
the fourth child. To take advantage of the monthly fee, all payments must be
made before the beginning of the month. Parents who use extended day on a regular
basis, but not for the full amount of time every month, may also pay for the
month in advance. This will avoid having to write a daily check. Parents who use the service on an occasional
schedule must pay by check daily. A one-day voucher may be issued, instead of
payment, but this must be paid by the next school day. If the office does not
receive this, the student(s) will not be able to use the service until it is
paid. The cost for all students enrolled on a daily
or occasional schedule is: 1. $ 5.00
from dismissal until 4:00 pickup; 2. $15.00
for the first child from dismissal until 6:00 pickup; 3. $ 5.00
for each sibling from dismissal until 6:00 pick up. These charges include students who must go to
extended day because their drivers were not available at the 2:45 dismissal.
These rates reflect full school day schedule. On Early Dismissal days the following rate
schedule is applied for all students enrolled on a daily or occasional
schedule: 1. $10.00
from dismissal until 4:00 pickup; 2. $15.00
for the first child from dismissal until 6:00 pickup; 3. $ 5.00
for each sibling from dismissal until 6:00 pick up. An additional fee of $5.00 per five minutes will be
charged for pick-up after 6:00 p.m. When parents plan for their child to attend
extended day on an occasional basis, they must inform the office before noon
the day the service is requested. If parents wait until the afternoon,
especially after 2:00, their request may not be communicated. ALL PAYMENTS MUST BE MADE BY CHECK. Extra-Curricular Programs

What grades does your school have? Guardian Angels currently has students in grades VPK through grade eight.
Are your teachers certified? We are very proud of the staff we have assembled here at Guardian Angels. All of our classroom teachers hold a valid Florida teaching certificate. Our specialists hold a valid teaching certificate or have the credentials required through our accrediting agency, The Florida Catholic Conference. In addition to our teachers, we have teaching assistants in each classroom during various times of the day in VPK through grade 5. A single assistant is shared between the middle school teachers.
What standardized tests do you give your students? The Diocese of St. Petersburg currently gives students in grades 3 – 8 the Iowa Assessment. The Diocese requires we participate in a spring testing schedule. The ACRE (Assessment of Catholic Religious Education) test is given to students in grades 5 and 8 in the spring of each year.
The students at Guardian Angels consistently achieve high scores on these tests. They rank at or above both the national and diocesan averages in most areas assessed. The information gained from these tests helps the staff provide an appropriate educational program for their students.
Are you accredited? Guardian Angels is accredited by the Florida Catholic Conference. This agency is responsible for the accreditation of all of the Catholic schools in the state of Florida. Guardian Angels accreditation was extended in the spring of 2008. The school has a School Improvement Plan (SIP) that contains well – defined goals and an action plan for attaining those goals over the next three – five years.
What are the school hours? The school hours are 7:50AM – 2:25 / 2:50PM. Students may be dropped off as early as 7:25AM. At this time we do not offer a before school program to supervise students who may need to be dropped off earlier.
Do you have an extended day program? Yes, we do. Currently our extended day program is available to all students until 6:00PM on most school days. Students can pre-order and pay for lunch that is brought to the school from a variety of vendors. Alternative lunch usually begins in September and is provided every full school day. If students do not wish to participate, they bring a lunch from home.
Is involvement of parents welcomed? Parental involvement is encouraged through the Parent – Faculty Association. This very active group is always looking for willing volunteers to help with the many things they provide the school community each year. Volunteers are also utilized in the classrooms depending on the teachers’ needs. These opportunities for involvement foster the strong community spirit that exists at Guardian Angels.
What other special classes do you offer? Spanish, art, general music, physical education, media, and technology classes are additional classes offered at Guardian Angels.
